A message from Liu & Associates regarding recently discovered tax filing fraud:

“We were in the process of filing a client’s personal income tax return recently and found that the return was reported by cra as already filed with a substantial refund.

Apparently, the refund was already processed and paid by CRA.  This puzzled us since, the information filed did not match the client’s furthermore, the client did not file the return.  .

What we was later discovered is that someone stole the client’s identity (SIN, ADDRESS etc. all essential information) and fraudulently filed as the client putting in a fake T4 with a large amount of tax deducted so that when the return was filed, there was a huge refund.  The perpetrator must have gone to an instant refund establishment as the refund was processed and paid to immediately.  CRA and the client is now investigating this matter.”
